Protect Your Child’s Smile

March 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

One of the easiest ways to protect your child’s smile is to be conscious of the food that they are eating.

It is important to emphasize that reducing the number of sweets is extremely important for oral health.  Sugar speeds up the tooth decay process.  Sugar provides energy to the bacteria that causes tooth decay and other oral health problems.  Sugar is essentially a multiplier for tooth decay and should be limited for optimum oral health.

Limit your child’s intake of sugar.  Reduce the number of candy bars and reduce the soda that they are allowed to drink.  Read labels and identify products that contain lots of added sugar.  Make available more healthy, sweet alternatives such as fruit or juices.  Not only will this provide oral benefits,  but also overall health benefits.  Healthy habits established early are likely to carry over for many years.

Good Oral Health is Good Heart Health

February 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

Doctors have found a link between oral health and heart disease.  Individuals with good oral health are better protected from heart disease.

Gum disease causes an increase of bacteria in the mouth.  With the bacteria in the mouth,  there is greater chance that it can make its way into the blood stream which begins to cause heart problems.

A focus on dental health is important to help protect yourself from heart disease.

Healthy Mouthy = Healthy Child

February 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

February is ‘National Children’s Dental Health Month’. Because of this, it is important to remember the value of your child having healthy teeth. Almost all studies have found a link with a children’s dental and mental/physical health.

When a child has healthy teeth and good oral hygiene, they are more likely to have good physical health. Further, children with healthy teeth are more likely to be happy than children with poor oral hygiene.

This is for a variety of reasons. Healthy teeth can promote overall health because many problems start in the mouth. Next, bad dental health can be a cause of pain and unpleasantness for a child. It is important to remember that setting up good habits for the children at an early age can promote a healthy lifestyle for later in life.

A child’s first dental health visit should start after 18 months. After that, the parents and dentist can decide what is the best schedule for regular check-ups and appointments on a case by case basis.
