Dentists Offers Dollars For Kids’ Candy
October 31st, 2008 · No Comments
Kids are in for a treat for their treats this Halloween. A dentist is offering children $1 per pound of candy that they turn in, along with a toothbrush and a coupon for a dental exam and x-ray. The dentist hopes to get candy out of the hands of kids, who tend to go overboard on the sweet treats during the haunting season. The dentist got the idea from his daughter who used to eat all of her bags of halloween candy. He and his wife began hiding the candy, until their daughter caught on and started hiding it from them. They got her to give them candy up using incentives.Children who bring in five pounds of candy or more will receive an electric toothbruth. The dentist is prepared to buy back up to 1,000 pounds of candy from little ghouls and goblins. If you are in the Chicago area and need a good family dentist for your children, turn to a name you can trust. Alaska Approves Laser Gum Cleaning
October 15th, 2008 · No Comments
ACHORAGE, Alaska- Residents in the snowy state of Alaska now have the opportunity to get laser-assisted teeth cleaning. The procedure has come to the region for the first time with the certification of 10 dental hygienists.
The hygienists, all from Alaska Premiere Dental Group in Anchorage and Wasilla, will be using the new a soft tissue diode laser. This follows the 2006 state approval of laser use for dental hygiene applications.
The use of the laser eliminates the need to scrape gums with an instrument for patients with severe cases of gum disease. Benefits include reduced patient discomfort, less tissue trauma and bleeding, and increased resistance to periodontal disease made possible by more effective removal of bacteria.

Study: Sweetener May Prevent Tooth Decay in Children
July 18th, 2008 · No Comments
A study of over 100 young children (avg. 15 months old) suggests that daily doses of xylitol, a naturally occurring sweetener, may actually help prevent childhood cavities. Researchers from the University of Washington reported that 76% children who were given doses of xylitol twice daily were cavity free at the end of the study, compared to only 48% of children who were given a single dose every day.
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol, a type of sweetener which, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), does not cause tooth decay. In fact, studies like that conducted by the University of Washington have suggested that it may actually stop the growth of tooth decay-causing bacteria.
